In 1949 the population of Wagga Wagga, a region town 40km west of the Hume Highway, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne was a little over 15 000. Australia was still recovering from WWII. During the war it saw the creation of air training facilites that included advanced training for US pilots at Forest Hill and Uranquinty.
Wagga Wagga was proclaimed a city in 1946. There were no computers, no shopping malls, no university, no motels, and no art galleries. These amenties would came later.
On 15 December 1949 a group of enthusiasts met at the house of Mrs Joyce Jenkins to discuss the possibility of forming an Art Society in Wagga to provide the study of fine arts and to hold exhibitions. The first regular meeting was was held in the School of Arts 14 April 1950. There were eighteen foundation members.
